Online Security

Online banking is built using state-of-the-art technologies that provide a high degree of security. The security infrastructure comprises of firewalls, intrusion detection systems and virus monitoring tools. The security requirements have been implemented and audited by an international consulting firm, using internationally accepted standards and practices.

Online banking uses 128-bit digital certificate from Verisign for encryption of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) session. SSL is the industry standard for encrypted communication and ensures that customers interaction with the Bank over the Internet is secure.

In addition to security technology, security is also built into the login process. Online banking enforces the use of a minimum six character password including characters (A-Z, a-z) as well as numbers (0-9). We also use secret question/answers to protect your online banking details.

Log in precautions

Online Banking brings you a lot of convenience! Ensure you don't ever have to regret it by following these simple, easy-to-keep tips!

 Log-in with caution

  • Avoid using shared computers when accessing online banking

  • Avoid logging into Barclays Online Banking or using critical passwords at internet cafes, libraries, and other public sites to avoid the risk of information being copied and re-entered after you leave

  • Change your passwords regularly

  • Contact Barclays immediately if you suspect your Online Banking password has been compromised

  • Use a password on your computer to prevent unauthorised individuals from accessing your information

  • Disable the 'AutoComplete' function within your browser

  • Always remember to log-off online banking and close your browser when you have finished

Never respond to unsolicited emails requesting that you re-validate your personal information or click on a link to a website that requires you to provide your account information. These emails may appear to come from a trusted source, but they are designed to obtain your personal financial information.

Always ensure antivirus software, firewalls and other on-line protection security features are installed on your personal computer and kept up to date.

Avoid downloading software such as screen savers, games and other types of programmes from websites which may contain Trojans or phishing viruses that enable hackers to monitor or steal your personal financial details.

How we protect you when using online banking?

Secure Code

Your online security is our priority, that’s why we have developed Secure Code, a new security feature that helps us to identify that it is really you making the transactions. Secure Code is a unique code that will be sent to your mobile phone via SMS whenever you use certain features on online banking. You will be prompted to enter the Secure Code on the screen before being able to proceed. The activities that will generate a Secure Code are:

  • Registering for online banking

  • Changing a forgotten password or username

  • Addition of beneficiaries to your registered beneficiaries address book

  • One time transactions to unregistered beneficiaries

Virtual Keyboard

The virtual keyboard to log-in is one of the security features available to online banking. With a virtual keyboard, you can enter your password on screen with the help of your mouse rather than your computer keyboard.

Virtual keyboards are designed to reduce the risk of programs that download themselves to your computer and create keystroke logs that can be used to gain access to your accounts. Keeping your convenience in mind, with Barclays Online Banking you can opt wether to enter your password using the Virtual Keyboard or switch it off. From a security perspective, we recommend that you always use Virtual Keyboard when logging in.

Virtual keyboards are an important component in securing your online banking experience. However they do not prevent malicious programs being downloaded to your computer so you should always have an up-to-date virus scanner and firewall on your computer.

Our System Security

Data encryption:

Our online banking service is hosted on a secure, 128-bit encrypted server. This means that any information you send us is encoded for your protection.

Timed logout:

Online banking logs you out automatically if you don't use the service for 10 minutes. This gives you added protection if you forget to log yourself out.

Deactivation of your log-in details:

We'll automatically disable your access to online banking if three incorrect attempts are made to log-in using your details. This is to stop fraudsters making repeated attempts to access your accounts.

What should I do if I’ve fallen victim to fraud on my Account?

Contact us on 04 428 6000 immediately if you think you are or may be a victim of fraud on your Barclaycards or accounts. If you have received a suspicious email that claims to be from us, please forward it to uaefraud@barclays.com and then delete the email immediately.

FAQs

Account help

How do I register for online banking?

Registration is easy and can be done online in minutes. You will need the following to hand before you register: Passport number, your current or savings account number or your Barclaycard number. Please keep your mobile phone nearby as you will be sent the secure code via an SMS. Once you have these to hand then visit our registration page and follow the on-screen instructions.

I have forgotten my username, password or secret question answer. What should I do?

If you cannot remember your username, password or secret question answer, you can retrieve them online via the online banking help section. All you need is your passport number, date of birth, account number and mobile phone to hand.

I have entered my passport number, date of birth and account number to register for online banking, but I am getting an error message.

One of the most common reasons for this error message is because your details that we have on file at Barclays differ from the details you have entered. Please telephone Phone Banking on 04 428 6000 to check whether your passport number, date of birth and account number are up to date. If your details have changed, you will need to update them via the customer maintenance process.

One of the other errors commonly seen is that the account number is not correctly entered. You need to enter the full account number (without the preceding zeros) and this number is typically 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long. If registering with a credit card you need to enter the last six digits of the card number.

What do I need to login to Online Banking?

To use online banking, you need to ensure that your computer is setup correctly and has the right hardware, operating system and browser. If you don’t have the right set-up, online banking may not work. Here is a checklist of what you’ll need:

Please telephone phone banking on 04 428 6000 and ensure your passport number, date of birth and mobile phone number are correctly recorded for both your account and card details. If not, you will need to update your details via the customer maintenance process.

Why does online banking sometimes log me out automatically?

If you don’t touch a key or take any action on online banking for more than ten minutes, for security purposes, you will be automatically logged-out of your Online Banking session. You will need to log-on again to continue using this service.

Can I change my password?

Yes. As an added security feature, you will have the option of changing your password as often as you feel it is appropriate. This is done through the ‘My profile’ menu within online banking.

I have a non UAE mobile number will the secure code SMS still reach me?

Yes, the SMS will be sent to non UAE mobile numbers so it will still reach you wherever you are. We have recently been facing issues with Secure Code reaching non UAE mobile numbers as many international telecom providers block messages sent by companies to avoid spamming their customers. If you are not able to receive the Secure Code SMS, we can send you the Secure Code via email instead.

I am a resident of Saudi Arabia – why am I not allowed to register for Online Banking?

The Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) issued a ruling in April 2010 stating that residents of Saudi Arabia should not be provided with electronic banking services from financial institutions operating outside the boundaries of Saudi Arabia. As such, our online banking services have been blocked for customers who are residents of Saudi Arabia.
