SMS Alert Service

Overview

Keep track of your money with our handy SMS Alert Service.  This secure service is available on all Premier Banking, Premier Life and Personal Banking Current or Savings accounts. Customers will be automatically registered for this free-of-charge* service.

You will receive an SMS alert each time any of the following transactions or events occurs:

  • Withdrawing cash from an ATM using your Barclays debit card

  • Making a purchase at Point-Of-Sale using your Barclays debit card

  • If a cheque issued from your account cannot be fulfilled i.e. bounces

  • If a cheque deposited into your account cannot be fulfilled i.e. bounces

Barclays take a number of security precautions to protect your accounts. We always use a secure service to send SMS alerts and will never send your account details or any other personal information via the SMS channel. However, as an additional security measure, we do recommend that you use a PIN code on your phone to keep all information stored on the device completely secure. 

We will send SMS alerts to the mobile phone number that we hold for you on our records.  If you have changed your number recently, or if you have not updated your contact details with us for some time, we recommend that you get in touch to update your contact details.


*Barclays does not charge for the SMS Alert Service. However, please be aware that your mobile phone provider may charge you a fee for receiving SMS alerts, particularly if you are travelling overseas.

What you need

  • A mobile phone registered with a UAE network provider, e.g. Etisalat or Du. We can’t send SMS alerts to landline phones or to personal computers. We do send SMS alerts to international numbers but please be aware that some international mobile network providers may not deliver these alerts to your mobile phone.

  • A Premier, Select Account or Personal Banking Current or Savings Account. We only send SMS alerts for personal accounts. We do not send SMS alerts for any company or business accounts.

  • We will send SMS alerts to the mobile phone number that we hold for you on our records. If you have changed your number recently, or if you have not updated your contact details with us for some time, we recommend that you get in touch to update your contact details.

What is the SMS Alerts Service?
It is a convenient new service that allows you to keep track of your money and the transactions you make. You will receive an SMS Alert each time any of the following transactions or events occurs:

  • Withdrawing cash from an ATM using your Barclays debit card

Who is the SMS Alerts Service available to?
This secure service is available on all Premier Banking, Select Account and Personal Banking Current and Savings account. For jointly held accounts, the primary account holder will be sent the SMS alert. SMS alerts will not be sent to supplementary debit cardholders or joint account holders.

Is there a charge for the SMS Alerts Service?
Barclays does not charge for the SMS Alert Service. However, please be aware that your mobile phone provider may charge you a fee for receiving SMS alerts, particularly if you are travelling overseas.

Do I need to register for the SMS Alerts Service?
No registration is required for this service.  You will be automatically registered for the service.

Can I de-register from the SMS Alerts Service?
The service is offered as a fraud prevention measure and is now a requirement for all banks in the UAE, as mandated by the UAE Central Bank. It is therefore not possible to de-register from the service.

How soon after a transaction is made with the SMS alert be sent?
For transactions at an ATM or at Point-Of-Sale (POS), you should receive the SMS alert within 15 minutes of completing your transaction. For cheque related transactions, you will receive the SMS alert are the end of the business day.

What should I do if I am not receiving SMS alerts?
If you are not receiving SMS alerts please call us on +9714 4286000 and we will investigate the issue.

Will I receive an SMS alert for all cheque ‘bounces’?
An SMS alert will be generated for cheque bounces into or out of your Barclays account.  The exception to this is for over the counter cheque bounces i.e. cheques drawn on a Barclays account that are bounced in a Barclays branch.  No SMS alert will be sent in this instance as you will already be notified of the bounce in person.

Do you communicate the reason for cheque ‘bounces’ in SMS alert?
Yes, the reasons will be communicated in the SMS alert.
